Uganda’s president disburses Shs1.2 billion to ghetto youths – here’s why

In a bid to ease the economic burdens of disenfranchised Ugandans, as well as tackle some political complications, the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, has disbursed a total of Shs1.2 billion ($319,643.40) to the accounts of selected recipients. These recipients are primarily young people living in the slums of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts. The amount was spread across 12 different savings and credit co-operatives (Saccos) belonging to these youths.

As reported by The Monitor, a Ugandan news publication, the funds were disbursed as part of a program to alleviate youth poverty.

The program launched in Kampala on Wednesday aims to create opportunities for young people and bolster certain sectors. According to the president, young people in the country have the ability and ideas to develop agriculture, factories and industries, ICT, and innovations sectors.

“As the government, we shall educate you, as well as give you startup capital. I don’t want you to be there doing nothing on the false statement that there is no money, yet we have plenty,” Museveni stated
